The communities of Cumberland, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts are mourning the tragic deaths of Joel Costa, 29, of Hyde Park, Massachusetts, and Jonathan Welch, 44, of Norton, Massachusetts, following a devastating multi-vehicle collision on Interstate 295 North.
According to the information provided, the crash occurred Thursday afternoon at approximately 3:31 p.m. near the Mendon Road overpass in Cumberland. Rhode Island State Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.
Three vehicles were reportedly involved: a Hyundai Ioniq, a Dodge Ram 1500 and an Acura ADX. Preliminary information indicates that the Hyundai was traveling at a high rate of speed before entering the grassy median on the southbound side. The vehicle struck the center guardrail and crossed into the northbound lanes, where it collided head-on with the Dodge Ram driven by Welch.
The impact caused the Dodge to overturn onto its passenger side before sideswiping the Acura. The Acura came to rest in the right breakdown lane and sustained minor damage.
Costa was trapped inside the Hyundai and was pronounced dead at the scene. The vehicle reportedly began smoldering following the collision and later became engulfed in flames, prompting emergency crews to respond quickly.
Welch was also trapped inside his vehicle and required assistance from firefighters and rescue personnel. He was transported to Rhode Island Hospital with serious injuries but later died.
Preliminary information from state police indicated that neither Costa nor Welch was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Investigators continue to examine witness statements, roadway evidence, vehicle positions and other circumstances surrounding the collision.
