The Kenyan community in Alabama and across the United States is mourning the heartbreaking loss of George N. Mathu, a 20-year-old Kenyan-born young man who tragically died following a fiery vehicle crash on Interstate 459 in Vestavia Hills, Alabama, on August 14, 2026.
According to information from the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office, the crash occurred at approximately 5:20 a.m. as George was traveling to work. Several vehicles were involved in the collision before his vehicle left the interstate, overturned, and caught fire. George was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 5:28 a.m.
George was a 2024 graduate of Thompson High School and was remembered as a humble, caring, hardworking, and compassionate young man. Those who knew him described someone who valued his family, served others, and brought warmth and kindness wherever he went.
He had previously served as an altar boy at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church and was a proud member of Jumuiya Juniors Alabama. Through his faith, community involvement, and relationships, George touched many lives and became a valued member of the Kenyan community.
He is survived by his parents, John and Josephine Mathu, and four siblings, who are now facing the unimaginable pain of losing a beloved son and brother at such a young age. The family has expressed gratitude to the Vestavia Hills rescue team and everyone who has offered prayers, condolences, encouragement, and support.
A memorial service and vigil will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, August 28, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Montevallo. The funeral Mass and burial are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, August 29, at the church and Montevallo Cemetery.
Our deepest condolences go to George’s family, friends, classmates, church community, and everyone mourning his passing. His life may have been tragically shortened, but his humility, kindness, faith, and caring spirit will remain in the hearts of those who knew him.
May his family find strength and comfort during this difficult time, and may the memories of George continue to inspire those he leaves behind. May George N. Mathu rest in eternal peace.
