A disturbing stabbing at a gurdwara in Edmonton, Alberta, has left two men injured and prompted an investigation into whether the attack may have been motivated by hate. The incident occurred shortly before 5 a.m. Friday at the Nanaksar Gurdwara, where police say a 27-year-old man allegedly entered the place of worship and attempted to access the prayer area.
According to the Edmonton Police Service, staff confronted the man, and the situation escalated. Two male patrons were allegedly stabbed with a screwdriver during the confrontation. Witnesses intervened and managed to restrain the suspect until police officers arrived at approximately 5:10 a.m. and took him into custody.
The victims, aged 75 and 51, were transported to hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening. Gurdwara president Zora Singh Grewal identified them as a granthi, or priest, and a sewadar, or volunteer.
The incident has deeply shocked members of the Sikh community, particularly because it occurred inside a place of worship. Community members reportedly acted quickly to prevent the attacker from reaching or damaging the Guru Granth Sahib, the central and most sacred scripture of Sikhism.
The suspect was reportedly released from federal prison on Thursday, one day before the alleged attack, after serving a sentence related to aggravated assault and assaulting a peace officer. Police had also reportedly been seeking him following an earlier incident involving threats toward motorists.
Edmonton Police Service investigators, including the Hate Crimes Unit, are examining the circumstances to determine whether the attack was hate-motivated. Charges against the suspect were pending at the time of the report.
Canadian officials have condemned the incident, emphasizing that everyone should be able to worship without fear. The attack has left members of Edmonton’s Sikh community shaken while investigators continue working to establish what led to the violence.
