Allison Lakie Syracuse, NY Obituary-Death: Allison Lakie Remembered in Syracuse Following 2021 Fatal Police Shooting

Allison Lakie, a 33-year-old Syracuse, New York, woman, is being remembered following her death on October 20, 2021, during an encounter with Syracuse police officers at a home on Ulster Street.

The incident occurred after Lakie’s mother contacted 911 over concerns about her daughter, who was reportedly experiencing a crisis involving mental health and substance use. Police officers and emergency personnel responded to the residence and spent time attempting to de-escalate the situation.

According to an investigation by the New York State Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation, Lakie was armed with knives during the confrontation, and a fire had also been started inside the residence. Officers eventually entered the home, where Lakie approached them while armed. Four officers fired their weapons, fatally wounding her.

The Attorney General’s Office conducted an extensive review of the circumstances. Investigators examined body-camera recordings, 911 calls, witness statements, radio communications, photographs, ballistics evidence and other materials connected to the incident.

In September 2022, the Attorney General’s Office determined that criminal charges would not be pursued against the officers. Prosecutors concluded they could not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the officers’ actions were legally unjustified under New York law.

Despite the official findings, Lakie’s death left a lasting impact on her family and the wider Syracuse community. The incident also contributed to broader conversations surrounding police responses to people experiencing mental-health or other crises and the importance of specialized crisis-intervention services.

A local mental-health organization had been working alongside police at the time, with clinicians participating in efforts to help de-escalate crisis situations.

For Lakie’s family and friends, however, her memory extends beyond the circumstances of her death. Her relatives continue to remember her as a loved one whose life and relationships remain part of their family history.

Our condolences go to Allison Lakie’s family, friends and everyone affected by her loss. May those who knew her continue to find comfort in their memories of her life.
