Luis Rivera, 24, of Okeechobee, Florida, passed away unexpectedly on August 17, 2026, leaving behind a grieving family, countless friends, students, coworkers, and community members whose lives were touched by his kindness and extraordinary personality.
A lifelong resident of Okeechobee, Luis was deeply devoted to the people around him. He is survived by his mother, Sandra Angelica Ortega Gutierrez; his brother, Edgar Mirsha Rivera, his wife Andrea Leon, and their children Edgar, Dalilah, and Caleb; and his brother, Uriel Rivera.
Luis’s family extended far beyond those connected by blood. His adoptive family, Denise Whitehead, Makaya Purvis (Whitehead), Tommy Purvis, and Cheryl Worlow, held a special place in his heart. They loved him as their own, and he returned that love wholeheartedly.
Music was another defining part of Luis’s life. As an alumnus of the Okeechobee High School band program and later a percussion instructor, he dedicated himself to teaching students, supporting marching band, percussion, and color guard. He encouraged young people to believe in themselves and took great pride in watching them grow.
His Band Family, including Clint and Courtney LaFlam and their children, Cadence and Cooper; Chris and Jenny Bowen and their children, William and Jameson; Katie and Toby Doyle; Jasmine Futch; and many others, will remember him with immense love.
Luis also became a mentor and coach to coworkers at Wawa. His close friends included Hannah Harper, Ashley Travieso, Irina Segur, and his boyfriend, Fabian Gomez, along with many others who became like family.
Those who knew Luis will remember his enormous smile, infectious laughter, biggest hugs, outgoing personality, and compassionate heart. He had a remarkable ability to make people feel heard, valued, and loved.
Our deepest condolences go to Luis’s family, loved ones, friends, students, coworkers, and everyone affected by his passing. His legacy will live through the people he encouraged, taught, supported, and loved.
A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, September 4, 2026, at More 2 Life.
May Luis Rivera’s memory continue to shine through the countless lives he touched. May his loved ones find comfort in the laughter, lessons, music, and beautiful memories he leaves behind.
